Tests of Ammonia :

  • Ammonia can easily be detected by its typical pungent smell.
  • It converts moist red litmus into blue colour.
  • It gives brown precipitate with Nessler’s reagent.
  • It forms dark blue coloured complex, tetraamine cupric sulphate with copper sulphate solution
  • With a drop of hydrochloric acid, ammonia produces dense white fumes of ammonium chloride.
  • Ammonia gives a yellow precipitate with chloroplatinic acid.
