Nomenclature of Phenols Preparation and Properties
→ When —OH groups is attached to benzene ring, the common name of aromatic compound thus obtained is phenol. it is also an accepted IUPAC name. If other substituents are present on ring. with OH group, main functional group is given 1-position and numbering is done in such a way that substituents get lowest number.
→ In common system position of substituents of benzene ring also represented by ortho for 1, 2, meta for 1, 3 and para for 1, 4 positions.
