Iodoform Preparation and Properties
Laboratory Method By haloform reaction :
→ Yellow precipitate of iodoform is prepared by the action of iodine on ethyl alcohol or acetone in the presence of aqueous NaOH. This reaction is also known as iodoform reaction.
Physical Properties of Iodoform
→ It is a yellow coloured crystalline solid. It is insoluble in water but readily dissolves in alcohol, ether, CHCl3 etc. It is more reactive than chloroform and it decomposes at room temperature to give iodine vapours. Melting point of iodoform is 392 K.
Chemical Properties of Iodoform
- Reactions of iodoform are similar to that of chloroform.
- Pure chloroform does not form white precipitate of AgCl with AgNO3 solution hut iodoform gives yellow
- precipitate of Agi with AgNO3 solution because iodoform easily decomposes and release iodine vapours.
Some reactions of iodoform are as follows: .
Uses of Iodoform
lodoform is used in the form of antiseptic and disinfectant.
