Hydrogen as Fuel, Hydrogen Economy Chemistry Notes
Hydrogen as Fuel, Hydrogen Economy :
→ As we know that petroleum and coal are more used as fuel but this fuel is reducing day by day. Its ending will affect very badly on industries and transport, which is a main problem. Besides this, these fuels are harmful for health and cause pollution. When these fuels undergo combustion then toxic gases like CO, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide are obtained.
→ So, there is continuous effort to control measures of this problem. Its alternative is liquid hydrogen because very high amount of heat is produced on combustion of hydrogen. We can analyse it from values of energy released as below:
|Energy released per gram
|Hydrogen gas [H2(g)]
|Hydrogen liquid [H2(l)]
|Octane in liquid state
→ It is clear from these data that both gaseous and liquid states of dihydrogen releases very high amount of energy on combustion. Hydrogen is a good fuel but large tank will be required for its collection and it is also a high inflammable gas.
→ So, it explodes on contact with flame. Hence, it can not be used now. But, liquid nitrogen can be used as fuel in rocket very carefully because it gives more stimulus force than fuels. But it is assumed that such vehicles will be made in future in which hydrogen will be used as fuel.
