If circuit is closed in Daniell cell, then following reaction takes place :
As time is passed, the concentration of Zn2+ ions increases while the concentration of Cu2+ ions decreases. At this time, voltage of cell, which can be read by voltmeter, decreases and after some time, the concentration of Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions remains constant and voltmeter shows zero. So, at this time, reaction comes in equilibrium state. Nernst equation for this equilibrium will be as follows:
