→ Coupling of reaction can be explained on the basis of Ellingham diagram. Ellingham diagram normally consists of plot of ∆G° vs temperature T for the formation of oxides of elements. This graphical representation of Gibbs energy was first used by H.J.T. Ellingham.

→ This graphical representation is known as Ellingham diagram. It provides a sound basis for considering the choice of reducing agent in the reduction of oxides into metals. It also helps us in predicting the feasibility or spontaneity of the thermal reduction of an ore because the criteria of feasibility of -ve value of Gibbs free energy at a given temperature.

→ Ellingham diagram has a plot for the oxides of elements between ∆G° value and temperature. It is shown in figure 6.5.
