Effect of Outer Potential on Galvanic Cell :
Ths study of effect of outer potential on galvanic cell is based on following three points:
→ When Outer Potential is less than 1.1 V-When outer potential applied on galvanic cell is less than 1.1 V then reaction proceeds i.e, the flow of electrons takes place from zinc rod to copper rod. So, electric current flows from copper to zinc. In this process, zinc dissolves at anode and copper is liberated at cathode.
→ When Outer Potential is equal to 1.1 V-If outer potential applied on galvanic cell is equal to 1.1 V then in this condition, reaction stops completely and flow of electrons or electric current does not take place in cell. In such condition, to chemical reaction takes place.
→ When Outer Potential is more than 1.1 V-When outer potential applied on galvanic cell is more than 1.1 V then at this condition, reaction proceeds in reverse direction ie, the flow of electrons takes place from copper to zinc and electric current flows from zinc to copper. In such condition, zinc is deposited at zinc electrode and copper dissolves from copper electrode.
