Physical Properties of Cyanide and Isocyanide Preparation and Properties
The physical properties of cyanide and isocyanide are follows :
→ Physical State : The lower members are colourless liquid whereas higher member are crystalline solid.
→ Alkyl cyanide have generally pleasant odour but alkyl isocyanide with same molecular weight have very unpleasant odours.
→ Boiling Points : Both —CN and —NC groups are polar. Due to high dipole moment these compounds have strong intermolecular attraction force. Alkyl cyanide have higher boiling point as compared to relative alkyl isocyanide isomer.
Example CH3CN Boiling point = 355 K
CH3NC Boiling point = 332 K
→ Solubility : Alkyl cyanides are more soluble than alkyl isocyanide because of hydrogen bonding.
However solubility decreases with increase in molecular mass.
