Aldehydes and Ketones Preparation and Properties
→ Aldehydes and ketones are those hydrocarbons derivatives which contains (>C = O) group. In aldehydes, oxygen atom is attached to primary carbon atoms whereas in ketones it is attached to secondary carbon atom.
→ In aldehyde, carbonyl carbon is attached to alkyl / arylalkyl/aryl group from one side. In ketone carhonyl carbon is attached to alkyl /arylalkyllaryl group on both
→ which is known as aldehyde group. It is always present at the end of carbon chain. Ketone have functional group > C = O which is known as ketonic group. It is always present in the middle of the chain.
→ If both the groups attached to carbonyl groups are same, then it is known as simple ketones and if both the groups are different, then it is mixed ketones.
→ The general formula for both aldehyde and ketone is CnH2nO.
